Valley of the Ahwahneechee

Valley of the AhwahneecheeI love the Yosemite Valley. I can understand how the Yosemite Indians revered this place. Legends tell of a band of peoples being led by the great spirit into a valley. These native people spoke the Miwok language and settled into the “ah-wah-nee” which means a deep grassy valley. The Ahwahneechees lived off the land. The streams were full of trout and the forests provided bear, deer, and elk meat. The trees and bushes gave them acorns, pine nuts, fruit and berries.  The Valley’s spirituality touches me deeply and I feel as though I am home. I wonder if I can ever truly capture the valley’s power and elegance and soul.
